Strategic Objective: Reducing vulnerability of Women and Youth to Violent Extremism and Conflicts 
Context 
Peace and security is about promoting peace, gender equality and justice. Systems of inequalities must be addressed to identify the root causes of and challenges to women’s participation in social, economic and political processes. The greatest contemporary threats to Kenya’s peace and security are posed by transnational networks of terrorist groups operating within Kenya’s boundaries and in neighboring Somalia. Additionally, Kenya is host to a large number of refugees. The gendered impact of displacement on women and host communities is a matter of concern. Internally, conflicts within and between pastoral and agricultural communities periodically lead to outbreaks of violence. These conflicts are exacerbated by fragile ecological conditions and competition for natural resources. Other factors such as political competition among clans and communities, stock theft, human–wildlife conflict, and the availability of illicit small arms have complicated and changed the conflict dynamics Conflicts have devastating consequences, including in widening gaps between women and men. Women often have fewer resources to protect themselves and, with children, frequently make up the majority of displaced and refugee populations. War tactics such as sexual violence specifically target them. Though women have led peace movements and driven community recovery after conflict, they are almost completely missing from peace negotiations. Exclusion from reconstruction limits access to opportunities to recover, to gain justice for human rights abuses, and to participate in shaping reformed laws and public institutions.
Priority Focus 
1. Counter - Violent Extremism (CVE)
CWID continues to work with County Action Plan on Prevention and Counter Violent Extremism actors and other development partners to contribute to reduction of violent extremism in Kenya.

2. Ethnic and Natural Resource-Based Conflicts
CWID works to support County Government to strengthen frameworks that may enhance sustainable peace in Kenya. In addition, CWID supports warring communities to develop people-centric peace building initiatives to avoid relapse into violent conflicts

Mombasa County Action Plan on Prevention and Countering Violent Extremism (MCAP-P/CVE)

CWID is the lead of Women Pillar of MCAP-P/CVE and continues to work with all other Pillar leads to ensure realization of the common goal.

Mombasa Port CSOs Platform

CWID is the lead of Gender and Labour and support other CSOs members in ensuring that labour agenda arising from Mombasa Port reform processes are conducted in a participatory manner to ensure peace within Mombasa and along the Northern Corridor.

Business Incubation & Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
Context
CWID supports young women and men to develop business and livelihood models. Specifically, CWID prioritizes the following:
a) Business incubation: CWID generates data to identify gaps and business opportunities for various groups. This is followed by direct supports (including capital, skills training for women and youth).

b) Technical and Vocational Education and Training: CWID's main aim is to enhance employability of vulnerable and marginalized youth & women through TVET. Specifically, CWID focusses on: Building partnerships with county governments, development partners and private sector; Entrepreneurship Education; and Labor market information

Access to Government Procurement Opportunities

CWID builds capacity of women entrepreneurs to access not only the procurement opportunities, but also capital and viable market.

Systems Strengthening for County Governments
CWID works with private sector and county government departments to support development of policy, legal and institutional frameworks that provide sound and enabling environment for women businesses

Strategic Objective: To improve access to justice for victims of gender-based violence in Kenya
Context
Advancing Gender Equality through Civil Society (AGEC’s) whose purpose is to improve local systems and institutions for Inclusive pre-primary and primary Education, women Empowerment and Gender Equality”, and this is made possible by support from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFAID) of the government of Canada through the Aga Khan Foundation Canada(AKFC) and has the following objectives;

The overall objective is to enhance equitable development and empowerment of women, girls, their families, and communities in selected areas of Africa.
Specific objectives:

Strengthen delivery of quality Gender responsiveness, inclusive education, early childhood development and other sustainable development services in selected areas of Africa.
To reduce gender and social barriers through utilization and uptake of education, early childhood development and other sustainable development services for women, girls, adolescents men and boys in select areas of Africa.
Enhance engagement of international and Canadian stakeholders in Gender sensitive and evidence based development issues and programming. Collaboration of Women In Development –CWID has implemented a six months project dubbed’’ Enhancing Capacity for Local Women Groups for Gender Equality in Mombasa County’’, Between July 2020 to January 2021. This project is targeting to Contribute to Gender Equality and Agency through Strong Civil Society Organizations in Mombasa County
Target Groups: Women Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Women Groups, Community Health workers (CHVs), Grassroots women movements, Domestic workers groups, Gender Technical Working Group, County Government Departments of Gender and Children Services, County Assembly Women Caucus, County Rapid Response teams and Member organizations of Pwani GBV Network.

Goal: Contribute to Gender Equality and Agency through Strong Civil Society Organizations in Mombasa

Expected Outcomes:
Outcome 1: Enhanced knowledge generation for informed programming towards supporting vulnerable women
Core Activities include: Vulnerability Assessment; Creation of online database of vulnerable women
Outcome 2: Strengthened capacity of local CSOs to reduce vulnerabilities of women and girls in Mombasa.
Core Activities include: Sub-County sensitization forums for CHVs, domestic workers and women groups on Home-based care and hygiene protocols on COVID 19, Cash transfer and livelihood trainings
Outcome 3: Strengthen Inter-Agency Coordination towards response to gender based violence.
Core Activities include: communication campaigns to address SGBV (Radio Talk shows, IEC Materials, Supporting GTWG to develop Inter-Agency Gender-Based Violence Case Management Guidelines for Mombasa County

Strategic Objective: To enhance Women's Voice and Agency to participate in decision making processes
Context
Women Gaining Ground consortium works with women and girls in ensuring opportunities for young women to become political actors and paying particular attention to the meaningful inclusion and leadership of Women With Disabilities (WWD's). The UN convention on the rights of Person With Disabilities (CRPD) has been ratified by over 150 states. However, Fewer than 50 countries have anti-discrimination and other disability -specific laws. WWDs are disproportionately affected by SGBV including forced institutionalization, denial of legal capacity, and forced abortion and sterilization. as well as psychological and emotional abuse. Women Rights Organizations have undertaken limited lobbying and advocacy in policy spaces that address the rights of WWDs.

A key contributing factor to women's lack of political participation is women's marginalization in civic and political spaces. Despite 50 years of women's movement advocacy and quotas in local government bodies, women's representation, particularly that of young women and WWDs is poor and the necessary impact has not been achieved. Elected women are frequently unprepared, lack a feminist perspective or become proxies of male political actors. Social norms and traditions ensure that women voices and leadership are minimal even in customary spaces and decision making process.
National plans, policies, institutions and budgets are where governments begin to translate commitments to women into practical progress towards gender equality. Too often, however, they overlook measures to ensure that public services respond to women’s needs and priorities. Viewing these dimensions of governance through a gender equality lens means putting aside the conventional assumption that they are gender-neutral. It entails comprehensively assessing gender gaps and identifying actions to close them. Changes to promote gender equality need to be backed by adequate funds, and systematically monitored for progress in reducing gender discrimination. focuses on providing technical support to county governments, conduct policy advocacy, and guidance in gender responsive responsive governance and development planning and implementation including budgeting processes.

CWID works to ensure an enabling environment through advocating for access to information, a vibrant civil society, freedom of expression and association, free and independent media, civic education, mechanisms for state-public consultation, and public redress systems such as public complaints and feedback processes, public petitions and public interest litigation mechanisms.

2. Leadership and Political Participation

CWID Gender and Governance Program is guided by national and county commitments to women’s representation since the promulgation of the Constitution 2010. To this end, CWID focus on capacity building of grassroots women aspirants, movement building, offer voter and civic education and sensitization campaigns on gender equality. In addition, CWID advocates for legislative and constitutional reforms to ensure women’s fair access to political spheres—as voters, candidates, elected officials and civil service members
